Interstitial cystitis

Interstitial cystitis is a benign painful pathology of the urothelium.

It is also known as painful bladder syndrome.[1][2]

General

  • Chronic cystitis, culture negative.

Epidemiology:[2]

  • Women > men.

Symptoms:[2]

  • Urgency.
  • Frequency.
  • Pain.

Treatment:

  • Difficult.[1]
  • Fulguration of ulcers (if present) may provide symptomatic relief.[3]

Gross

  • +/-Ulceration.

Microscopic

Features:[4]

  • +/-Ulceration (uncommon).

Urinary Bladder, Biopsy:
- Inflamed subepithelial tissue; NEGATIVE for appreciable amount of urothelium.
- NEGATIVE for evidence of malignancy.

Comment:
Deepers were cut (x4) and are non-contributory.
