Cytomegalovirus colitis is a type of colitis.
General
- Uncommon.
- Immunosuppressed population at risk, e.g. transplant recipients, individuals with HIV.
- Typically self-limited in immunocompetent patients.[1]
Microscopic
Features:
- Enlarged nucleus - classically in endothelial cells.
DDx:
- Infectious colitis without a distinctive morphology.
- CMV colitis superimposed on inflammatory bowel disease.

- Increases the sensitivity (compared to H&E alone).[2]
