Osteoarthritis, abbreviated OA, is a degenerative disease of the joint.

Risks

It is associated with:[1]

  • Advanced age.
  • Trauma.
  • Unusual loading (bony misalignment, obesity).

Gross pathology/radiology

  • Loss of cartilage, especially asymmetrical (eburnation).
  • Osteophyte formation.
  • Subchondral cysts.
  • Subchondral sclerosis.
