Pathology and food is a strange combination.
Gross pathology
- Strawberry gallbladder = cholesterolosis of the gallbladder.
- Chocolate cyst = endometriosis.[1]
- Sugar-coated spleen = hyaloserositis of the spleen.
- Apple core lesions = circumferential gastrointestinal tumour (usually sigmoid colon).
- Nutmeg liver = congested liver.
- Walnut brain = severe (frontal & temporal) cerebral atrophy in Pick's disease.
- Colorectal doughnuts.
Microscopic
- Salt-and-pepper chromatin = stippled chromatin (characteristic of neuroendocrine tumours).
- Doughnut cell (also donut cell) = large pseudoinclusions, as may be seen in anaplastic large cell lymphoma.[3]
