Urachal remnant is a benign congenital abnormality that occasionally becomes symtpomatic.

It includes:[1]

  • Urachal cyst.
  • Urachal diverticulum.
  • Patent urachus.

General

  • Benign.
  • Often asymptomatic.
  • May become inflamed and be symptomatic.
    • Can cause "fever of unknown origin".[2]
  • Common in adults - possibly up to 30% of population.[3]

Gross

Microscopic

Features:[5]

  • Cuboidal[4] or urothelial lining.
    • May have a columnar lining.
  • Fibrous wall.
  • +/-Goblet cells.[3]

Notes:

  • ‡ Goblet cells tend to be older individuals. Urothelial lining typical for individuals <20 years old.[3]
