Herpes esophagitis is an inflammation of the esophagus due to herpes simplex virus.

- Usually immunodeficient.[1]

Gross/endoscopic
Features:
- Ulcers with a "punched-out" appearance with a brown/red edge.

- Moulding.
- Multinucleation.
- Margination of chromatin.

- Occasionally HSV-2 +ve.
