Squamous metaplasia of lactiferous ducts, abbreviated SMOLD, is an uncommon benign change is in the breast typically seen in post-menuopausal women.
General
- Uncommon.[1]
- Associated with smoking.[1]
- Post-menopausal women.
- May be associated with subareolar abscess.
Gross
- +/-Nipple inversion.[2]
Microscopic
Features:
- Squamous epithelium - replaces (bilayered) lactiferous ducts - key feature.[2]
- Xanthomatous reaction.
